Taylor, Serrano on top of Empire State Building Ahead Of Historic MSG Showdown

INTERNATIONAL: Ireland's undisputed world lightweight champion Katie Taylor and Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano on Tuesday (April 26) faced off atop the Empire State Building in New York ahead of their April 30 bout.

They are the first female fighters to headline a card at Madison Square Garden.

"It's the first, but not the last," said Serrano. "You have two pound for pound great females going in there. And we're going to show that we deserve this. We deserve the spotlight. We're going to show it. We're going to sell out the Garden. So who said that they don't want to see women fight? You'll see. Tune in Saturday night and we're going to change your minds."

Taylor (20-0, 6 KOs), a 35-year-old gold medalist from the 2012 London Olympics, will be putting all of her lightweight belts on the line for the sixth time since winning them in 2019.

Brooklyn-based Serrano (42-1-1 30 KOs), whose sister Cindy lost to Taylor by unanimous decision in 2018, already has an unrivalled legacy in the sport as a seven-weight world champion.

"This is history in the making, and this is an iconic moment that will change the face of the sport forever," said Taylor's promoter, Eddie Hearn. "This fight will inspire a whole new generation of female fighters and athletes. But beyond that, in order to sustain women's sport, in order to sustain women's boxing, it needs to stand alone on its own merits. And I think the greatest thing about this fight is, we all know it's the biggest female fight of all time, but it stands as one of the biggest fights in boxing to date, the undisputed lightweight world champion against a seven-division champion."

Serrano, 33, enters the bout in sparkling form after knocking out Daniela Bermudez last March, dominating Yamileth Mercado in August and overpowering Miriam Gutierrez in two separate cards co-starring YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. Serrano signed with Paul's Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) last year.
